A new Spring season of outdoor skills and adventures! Join us while we navigate the landscape and learn about Wild spring edibles, animal tracks, fire building, orienteering, knife skills, shelter building, bird language, wildcrafting, archery and all the other seasonal learning opportunities that nature provides (and there's always something). Classes also include art projects, scientific studies, conceptual physics and much more.
Our small groups encourage working in community while also gaining independent skills as well as how to better understand the natural world, themselves and each other. Games, exploring the landscapes and handmade projects are daily activities and lead by advanced level outdoor educators.

An ongoing Teen experience in bushcraft, survival skills, naturalist studies, wild food harvesting, herbalism, animal tracking and so much more. Each classes centers around group and individual crafting projects, daily landscape wandering, and group games that connect kids to wild places on a deeper level.
Students are encouraged to be lead by curiosity and instinct, to step outside of their comfort zones and to work within both the human and natural communities that we are a part of.
Budding Naturalist Program: Thursdays

The budding naturalist program is all about nature observation through art. We will be walking through Mills reservation and talking about what we find including tree, plant and track ID before taking time to draw and write about what we observe. Our focus is to improve literacy and connect with nature as well as how to think like both an artist and a scientist.
Students are encouraged to be lead by curiosity and instinct, to step outside of their comfort zones and to work within both the human and natural communities that we are a part of.

It’s best to start ‘em young! Young explorers is a welcoming introduction to naturalist and survival skills for younger students. We will spend the week exploring our local environment, identifying plant, fungus and tree species, working on craft and art projects and playing survival themed games.

Candice is an outdoor educator, artist and mom with an M.S. in Education. She has over two decades of experience teaching children in a classroom in New York City, in the forests of New Jersey, as well as teaching English in China. She has always loved being in the forest, however it wasn’t until having children that her outdoor education really began. She has been a homeschooling mom for 12 years.

Survival 101
When: Monday, June 29 - Thursday, July 2

Location: Vulpes Outdoor Classroom, Bloomfield, NJ
4 days to cover the 4 pillars of survival: Shelter, Water, Fire, and Food. We will be covering the basics as well as the nuances of building shelters with no tools, fire from the landscape, finding and purifying water and foraging/cooking some lovely treats!
Our small groups encourage working in community while also gaining independent skills. Our goal is always to help our students better understand the natural world, themselves and each other.

Building structures, cooking food and teamwork are what this week is all about. We’ll be living our best camp life with fun team games, building with natural materials, eating campfire cuisine and homemade popsicles. Last year we built a beautiful fire pit as well as tables and benches for feasting on. How will the village grow this year!

THe hunter

Location: Reeve’s Meadow, Harriman State Park, NY
Based on my own experience walking the path of a hunter, this week focuses on the skills needed such as animal tracking, camouflage, stalking and movement, awareness, constructing quicky bows and arrows and much more. Filled with exciting games, challenges and potential challenge of hunting their teacher. Hot days will include dips in the local stream.

Art of survival

The relationship between nature and art is a unique and deeply human experience. As an artist and craftsman, I find endless inspiration in nature and in earth skills. This class combines artistry and survival skills in a way that is fun, inspiring and founded in thousands of years development and practice. Students will learn to find materials, use tools, make baskets, make paints and pens, solve challenges, wildcraft medicine and hone survival skills like fire making and carving.

Teen Adirondack Adventure

Location: Thirteenth Lake, Johnsburg, NY
Our second annual collaborative trip to the Adirondacks with Urban Kid Adventurers to test our skills in the gorgeous Adirondacks State Park. We will be camping along Thirteenth Lake, cooking our food over a fire, fishing, canoeing, hiking, wildcrafting, completing challenges, swimming and experiencing the emotional grounding and clarity of a few days spent immersed in mother nature.
